Shs20 Million Power Line Vandalism Leaves Nakasongola in Blackout.
Unknown individuals vandalize high-voltage power lines in Nakasongola district, Uganda, leaving the area in darkness and causing an estimated 20 million shillings in damages.
Nakasongola, Uganda | KAMU FRONT UPDATES | Police in Nakasongola have launched a manhunt for unidentified individuals responsible for vandalizing high-voltage electricity poles, plunging the area into darkness.
A recent incident in Nakasongola district has left the area in darkness after unknown individuals vandalized high-voltage power lines. The incident occurred on Tuesday at around 11 pm at Lubenge Swamp in Kakooge town. According to Sam Twineamazima, the Savannah Regional Police Spokesperson, the vandals cut down two poles of high voltage power lines and stole wires of 600 meters valued at approximately twenty million shillings.
The incident was reported on Wednesday after a technical officer from Umeme Limited investigated the power blackout in the area. The police have since opened a case of vandalism and malicious damage and are hunting for the culprits.
Unfortunately, cases of vandalism are common in the Savannah region, with suspects often coming from Kampala and Wakiso districts. In fact, in June, police arrested five men in connection with vandalism and malicious damage to power wires and poles in Nakaseke district. Similarly, in November, police arrested three people for allegedly vandalizing electric wires in Luwero district.
The problem of vandalism is not limited to Nakasongola district. According to Umeme Limited, the sector lost over 26 billion Shillings in stolen copper wires, vandalized transformers, and poles in 2021. To curb the vice, police are planning to charge suspected vandals with the Anti-Terrorism Act.
